In this post, we’ll be talking about flax seeds (which is also known as linseed)! Flax have been cultivated in China and ancient Egypt and is one of the oldest fiber crops in the world. It has been known for its health benefits for many years (which will be further discussed later on). And today, it can be found in many forms such as in oil, seeds, powder, capsules and etcetera.
So without further ado, let’s get started on the benefits of flax!
High In Nutrients
Flax seeds are good sources of many nutrients such as protein and fiber. Their health benefits are mainly due to their high content of omega-3 fats, lignans and fiber.
High in Omega 3 Fats
Flax seeds are rich source in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which is a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid. Since our body does not produce ALA, we have to consume certain foods in order to obtain it.
And this is where flax seeds come in handy as flax seeds are a rich source of the omega-3 fatty acid ALA. Plant-based ALA fatty acids alo reduces the risk of getting heart diseases and stroke.
High in Dietary Fiber
One tiny flax seed contains a very amount of fiber which is essential for a healthy bowel movement. It helps to improve our digestive health and it helps to prevent constipation from occurring as well.
Controls Blood Sugar Level
Flax seeds contain insoluble fiber; insoluble fiber slows down the release of sugar into the blood which subsequently reduces reduces our body’s blood sugar level. This can be a very beneficial addition in a diet for people with diabetes.
Flax seeds contains soluble fiber which helps to control our appetite and provide a feeling of fullness. The soluble fiber content in flax seeds slows digestion in the stomach, which causes a set of hormones that control appetite which makes us feel full. Hence, by adding flax seeds in your meals, it can be used as a means to manage your weight by controlling your appetite.
For Hair Care
Remember the ALA fatty acid that was just mentioned? Not only does it help to improve our hearth health, it also provides us with strong, silky and shiny hair; it also makes our hair more resistant to damage (for those of you who like to get your hair groomed often, do take note!).
For Skin Care
Aside from that, since flax seeds are rich in healthy fats, it is beneficial for our skin. Flaxseed oil are known as natural moisturizers; just rub some of it on your skin, and let it seep into your skin for a moist finish! (A shout out for you dry skin peeps)
